How long does it take for spray foam to dry?

Spray_Polyurethane_Foam_ApplicationSpray foam insulation is a great way to create a tight, energy-efficient building envelope. It comes in several versions, each of which comes with unique benefits. Though factors like temperature and ambient moisture can alter the curing time of foam, as a general rule it will cure within 24 hours. Foam can be applied directly to sheathing and is approved for contact with most building materials but may require additional coatings, depending on location and type of foam you are using.

We asked our National Spray Foam Products Manager, Michael Carpenter, to give a basic explanation of the different kinds of spray foam, and the best use for each. Here’s what he had to say:

Half-Pound Open Cell Spray Foam

This is the least dense of the foams, and has the advantage of being the quickest to install, as it can usually be applied with a single-pass installation. If you are looking for all the benefits of a tight high performance home, open cell is the most economical choice. Another advantage of half pound foam due to its softer texture is it’s sound absorption qualities. However, it is important to note that open cell is for interior use only.

insulation_mapBest uses:

  • Underside of roof deck and climate zones one through five
  • Exterior wall, wall cavities and climate zones one through five
  • Sound walls and between floors all climate zones

Two-Pound Closed Cell Spray Foam

This is a more dense version of the half-pound providing almost twice the R-value per inch of thickness. Additionally, two pound foam gives you added structural strength and due to its low vapor permeability it is classified as a vapor retarder and acts as a secondary bulk water barrier.

Best uses:

  • Shallow cavities where you need to reach higher R values
  • Underside of roof deck in coastal regions for added uplift and racking strength
  • Crawlspaces, exterior applications and below grade, like walk-in wine coolers
